Steven Piper

Steven Piper began his training at the age of eleven with Mary Day at the Washington School of Ballet, and after that, the Maryland Youth Ballet with Michelle Lees, Tensia Fonseca and Eric Hampton. He also studied with Nicolai Morozov at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington D.C., and after moving to Pittsburgh, he completed his training with Mansur Kamaletdinov, former Acting Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Ballet.

Steven danced professionally with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and Nashville Ballet, performing in numerous classical and contemporary works. Among his favorites were Choo San Goh’s Beginnings, Configurations and Unknown Territory, as well as Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante. In 2002 Steven graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a B. A. in History and Philosophy, and has taught ballet for the past 25 years.

Lindsay Piper

Lindsay Piper grew up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. She studied at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School, School of American Ballet and the Kirov Academy of Ballet (Washington D.C.). At 17 Lindsay began her professional career when she joined the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, then under the directorship of Patricia Wilde. While there she enjoyed dancing a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary works and working with established and emerging choreographers. Some of her favorite ballets included Balanchine’s Serenade, Concerto Barocco, Jewels and Symphony in C, Choo San Goh’s Beginnings and Kenneth McMillian’s Elite Syncopations. In 2002, Lindsay received a B.A. in Management from Chatham College, graduating magna cum laude with a membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She has taught ballet and rehearsed young children in the Pittsburgh area for the past 25 years, and resides in Jefferson Hills with her husband Steven, and their children Kyra, Ava, Stella and Griffin.

About Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh

Since the inception of Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh in 2006, Lindsay and Steven have strived to bring unique performing opportunities to the students of the school. Besides performing The Nutcracker annually, BAP has been honored to be granted permission from The George Balanchine Trust to perform such ballets as Valse Fantaisie, Divertimento No. 15, Walpurgisnacht Ballet, Serenade, La Source, Scherzo å la Russe, and excerpts from Coppelia, Harlequinade, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Stars and Stripes, Raymonda Variations, and Who Cares?. BAP has also been granted permission to perform Jerome Robbins’ Circus Polka and Peter Martin’s Eight Easy Pieces.
Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh students have been accepted to prestigious summer programs on scholarships to the School of American Ballet, American Ballet Theater, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Chautauqua School of Dance, Pennsylvania Ballet, Exploring Ballet with Suzanne Farrell, Ballet West, Orlando Ballet, and Carolina Ballet, among others.
Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh students have placed highly at the Youth American Grand Prix competition, including the 2015 Junior Grand Prix Winner – Pittsburgh regional.
We have had students studying in Pre-Professional training programs all over the country – School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet and the Colburn Academy as well as students attending university programs at Indiana University of Bloomington, Butler University, Point Park University and Mercyhurst University to pursue further ballet training.
Former BAP students have gone on to dance professionally with the New York City Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Ballet Arizona, Nashville Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, St. Louis Ballet, Fort Wayne Ballet, BalletMet, Richmond Ballet, Charlotte Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, American Repertory Ballet, and Grand Rapids Ballet.
Lindsay and Steven have extensive experience teaching classical ballet to all ages and levels of students. They use an enthusiastic approach to teaching to motivate and energize students. They believe in creating a positive and nurturing learning environment that inspires excellence and a commitment to achieving goals. ALL students benefit.
